Register a Domain Name

If you desire to develop a web site, this implies that you require a domain name. A domain name is an easy-to-remember name that you type in your web browser's address bar when you wish to access a certain web site.

Why Do You Require a Domain Name?

This is a subject I approach because one week ago my boss brought forth the idea of making a web site for our new venture. That itself is not an issue, the issue is that he needs a website, but has not made up his mind yet about what it should look like, what it should encompass, etc. All that he revealed to me was the name of the website - its domain name. Thus, we now have an Internet address for a future site and nothing else.

The Domain Name

Each website is hosted on a physical machine. That physical machine has its own personal physical address, popular also as an Internet Protocol address. Reaching a web site by typing the IP of the machine in your web browser, though, is not the best and most suitable thing to do, so that was how and why domains came into existence. So, a domain pertains to an IP address on the web. After it has been registered, of course.

Domain Name Registration

To register a domain, you first need to pick a domain name registration provider. NTC Hosting offers the best solution for my current and prospective projects - they offer a Domain Manager plan, which can be easily upgraded to a web hosting package at a later time - when my boss eventually reaches a decision about what function the site will serve.

Hence, to register a domain, you need to choose a name for your web site. After that, you need to select a top-level domain name - this is what follows the dot. For example, in 'dhl.com', '.com' is the top-level domain name (TLD). Clearly, '.com' is an abbreviation for 'company', '.net' is an abbreviation for 'network', '.org' is an abbreviation for 'organization', etc.

After you've picked your domain name and your future registrar, you have to discover whether the domain name you wish to register is available for registration, because someone else might have registered it already, no matter how embarrassing this might be. Each domain name registration company, including NTC Hosting, offers a tool at their signup page, which confirms the availability of a particular domain name. To continue with the registration of a domain name, you need to fill in some domain registrant information - the personal name, the address, the e-mail address and the telephone number of the domain's owner.

You've Registered a Domain... Now What?

I registered .com, .net, .name and .eu domains for our project, as per the wish of my still-hesitant-about-the-purpose-of-the-future-site boss. I tried out the domain name administration dashboard NTC Hosting is offering and found it very easy to use - everything is logically organized and, from what I noticed in the web hosting Control Panel demo at their web site, once we upgrade to a shared web hosting plan, it will stay the same, but with a lot more features. This, thank heavens, will save me quite a lot of discomfort from having to administer my domain name and hosting account separately. So, while waiting for the boss to determine at least what the site should contain, I was pleased to discover that the domain administration tool offers DNS administration and domain name renewal options, and - an extremely valuable functionality (!) - a parked domain name template, which I resorted to in order to set up a "Coming Soon" page for our domain names.

Country-Specific Top-Level Domain Names

I was very pleased to discover that NTC Hosting is offering multiple country-specific Top-Level Domains, because the project the website is aimed for is multinational. Country-code TLDs are delegated to domestic registries, which permit domain name registrar companies to register domains, usually at rates that are lower than those offered to the end users. There are various country-code domains: .co.uk for the United Kingdom, .nl for the Netherlands, .se for Sweden, .us for the USA, .ca for Canada, .com.au for Australia, and so on. This, I am convinced, will please my boss since we will be able to set up a local version of the web site for each country where the project will be introduced.
